Locally led, thoughtfully curated journeys for small groups seeking more than travel — seeking experiences that matter.
Mission
Journeys with Impact blends wonder with purpose. What if your next adventure wasn’t just about where you go, but what you discover along the way? We design intentionally small, guided journeys that begin with hands-on service at schools and vocational centers and unfold into the wild beauty of Southern Africa. Every day is crafted to invite deeper perspective, genuine connection, and leave you with experiences that reshape how you see the world.

Meet the Founders
Joy McPeters
Africa has been an important part of my life for more than 20 years when my husband I went on our first safari in Botswana. I’ve since traveled there over a dozen times, drawn not only by the culture and wildlife, but by the people and the deep connections created along the way.
I became involved with a women’s group in a small village near Mount Kilimanjaro. This prompted me to co-found the nonprofit Wanawake in Tanzania to support women through micro-loans and skills training, including jewelry making, empowering them to build sustainable livelihoods. Through this work, we also raised funds to construct a community and health center in their village—a sustainable project built in partnership with the women in the village.
For the past seven years, I’ve been closely involved with the Tongabezi Trust School, located outside of Livingstone, Zambia. In 2025, I spent two weeks on the ground teaching and volunteering alongside students and staff. I also introduced lacrosse and pickleball to the students. These experiences—working, learning, and giving back—have been some of the most meaningful of my life.
Journeys with Impact was born from a desire to share these transformative experiences with others. We believe travel can be a powerful force for good, fostering genuine connection, cultural exchange, and positive change for both travelers and the communities they visit.
Catherine Wharton
My college nickname was “Zimbab.” I was born in what was then Rhodesia, later Zimbabwe, and raised on a farm to parents who were fourth-generation South African and first-generation Rhodesian. Those roots shape me still. When my parents immigrated to the United States, they gave our family an incredible opportunity, yet part of my soul has always remained tied to southern Africa.
Life moved quickly — family, careers, responsibility. Over time, my professional path and my calling to Africa converged. Last March, I returned to Zambia with a group of Woodberry Forest boys over Spring Break to volunteer at the Tongabezi Trust School, a place Joy had come to know through her own journeys. The experience changed us all.
That trip closed one chapter in my life in education and opened another. Watching young men discover the power of service reminded me of a simple truth: in giving, we receive.
If you’re drawn to adventure, purpose, and connection, I invite you to journey with us. You’ll find it all, and leave with far more than you brought.
